Vaser Liposuction : what is it?

Vaser liposuction removes fat by first separating the fat cells from surrounding tissue with ultrasound energy. In conventional liposuction the fat is broken up mechanically by the cannulas. With Vaser, ultrasound liquefies the fat first, and blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue are relatively preserved. That means less trauma and the ability to work close to the skin, which is why it is preferred for superficial shaping such as abdominal definition. Liposuction is not a weight-loss method but a way of shaping stubborn areas that diet and exercise do not change.

Who is a suitable candidate?

  • Localised fat that persists despite diet and exercise
  • Good skin elasticity (if there is sagging, a lifting procedure may be needed)
  • Being close to your target weight
  • Wanting definition or a clearer body contour
  • General health suitable for surgery

How is it performed?

Tumescent fluid is first infiltrated into the target area; it reduces bleeding and numbs the tissue.

Ultrasound energy is delivered through a fine probe and the fat cells separate from surrounding tissue. The fat is then aspirated with fine cannulas.

The harvested fat can optionally be processed and transferred to areas where volume is wanted: buttocks (BBL), breast or face.

The areas treated most often are the abdomen, waist, back, hips, inner and outer thighs, arms, under the chin and, in men, the chest.

Recovery

The timeline below shows an average course. Your personal recovery depends on your age, skin quality, smoking and the extent of the operation.

First 24 hours

The compression garment is fitted immediately after surgery. Some leakage from the entry points is normal and expected.

Week 1

Bruising and swelling are at their most obvious. Walking starts early. Lymphatic drainage massage usually begins on day 3 – 5 and speeds up resolution of the swelling.

Month 1

The garment is worn for 4 – 6 weeks. Firmness and irregularity in the area may be felt; massage improves this. Sport resumes gradually in weeks 3 – 4.

Months 3 – 6

Swelling resolves completely and the skin adapts to the new volume. The final result is seen at 6 months; this is also when the contribution of Vaser to skin tightening becomes apparent.

Possible risks

Every surgical procedure carries risk. Knowing them is not meant to frighten you but to let you decide with full awareness. Each point is discussed individually at your consultation.

  • Irregularity, rippling or dents in the skin surface
  • Prolonged swelling and firmness
  • Temporary change in skin sensation
  • Thermal injury from the ultrasound energy (rare in experienced hands)
  • Asymmetry and the need for a touch-up
  • Fluid balance problems when very large areas are treated

Frequently asked questions

Does the fat come back?

The fat cells removed do not return. However, if you gain weight the remaining cells enlarge and your proportions can change. Keeping the result depends on keeping your weight stable.

What is the difference between Vaser and conventional liposuction?

With Vaser the fat is broken down by ultrasound first, which allows the surrounding tissue to be spared and precise work close to the skin. In the conventional method the separation is mechanical.

How many kilos will I lose?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. The aim is shape; the change on the scales is usually only a few kilograms.

Is the compression garment essential?

Yes. It reduces swelling and helps the skin settle evenly onto the new volume. Without it the chance of irregularity increases.
