J-Plasma (Renuvion) : what is it?
J-Plasma (Renuvion) is a tightening technology in which helium gas is converted into plasma by radiofrequency energy and delivered beneath the skin. The connective tissue under the skin contracts immediately, and collagen production is stimulated over the following months. It is most often used alongside liposuction: after fat is removed, the aim is for the remaining skin to retract better. This allows people with mild to moderate laxity to improve without an operation to excise skin.
Who is a suitable candidate?
- Those concerned about how their skin will retract after liposuction
- Mild to moderate skin laxity (advanced sagging needs a lifting operation)
- Laxity of the inner arms, inner thighs, abdomen, under the chin and neck
- Localised laxity after weight loss
How is it performed?
The procedure is usually performed in the same session as liposuction. After the fat is removed, a fine probe is advanced beneath the skin through the same small entry points.
Helium plasma delivered from the probe tip applies controlled heat to the subcutaneous tissue. The tissue contracts immediately, and collagen remodelling continues over the following 3 – 6 months.
No additional incision is required; the scars are the same few-millimetre entry points used for liposuction.
Recovery
The timeline below shows an average course. Your personal recovery depends on your age, skin quality, smoking and the extent of the operation.
The process follows that of liposuction; the compression garment is worn from the outset. Warmth and tightness may be felt in the treated area.
Swelling and bruising follow a similar course to liposuction. Firmness in the area is normal.
Change in skin firmness appears gradually. Firmness softens and contours become clearer.
Collagen remodelling completes; the full tightening effect appears in this period.
Possible risks
Every surgical procedure carries risk. Knowing them is not meant to frighten you but to let you decide with full awareness. Each point is discussed individually at your consultation.
- Thermal injury to the skin (depth and duration of application are critical)
- Prolonged swelling and firmness
- Irregularity of the skin surface
- Temporary change in sensation
- Insufficient result where sagging is advanced
This page is for general information and does not replace a consultation. The method that may apply to you, the expected outcome and the risks can only be determined after a medical examination.
Frequently asked questions
Does J-Plasma replace a lifting operation?
No. It gives a clear benefit in mild to moderate laxity, but where there is excess hanging skin the only answer is to remove that skin surgically.
Does it leave extra scars?
No. The work is done through the same few-millimetre entry points used for liposuction.
When is the result visible?
There is an immediate effect, but the real tightening develops over 3 – 6 months as collagen forms.
